News & Notes from Bayley

4/11/08

Well, I am getting back in the swing of things after my break. I was able to get a few things sewn for me and my daughters, which was nice. My next break will be in June, which will not be much of a break - it is our bi-annual doctoring week. My Daniel will be seeing all his specialists then.

It has been busy here with lots of orders and lots of things to do. My oldest son just got a new job with the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, and my oldest daughter is looking for employment so she can return to Uganda this fall. Two of the little ones are finishing up their homeschool work and we are getting ready for summer. The weather has not been cooperative - lots of rain - so we do not have anything planted yet.

Blessings,
Bayley

I'm getting ready for my "spring break" from sewing! We will shut down (sort of) a week from today for two weeks. During that time I will be catching up on our family sewing and also having some dental work done.

During these two weeks off, I will not shut the cart down, so orders for some items may still be made and will be shipped asap. Items that I do not have made and ready to go will be set as inventory "out of stock" - therefore all no-sew items (like hair accessories) will still be available, plus most bonnets and several traditionals. I have lots of veils cut and ready to sew, but not many sewn, so most veils will be out of stock.

So, if you want something before April, order now! We are closing for break on Saturday, March 15th! We will re-open and have everything up for ordering on Monday, March 31.

Blessings,
Bayley

Hello Ladies!
It's been a good month - opened the cart back up for orders around the 3rd or so. Things are going smoothly - my daughters and their friends did a large amount of pre-cutting of veils and coverings for me, which has been a major help.

This month we saw our oldest daughter off to Africa - we sure miss her, but she loves it there. She will return the 6th of February.

It is tax time, so in my spare moments I have been doing the family taxes. A long process, but I enjoy it. Maybe I am one of the very few who does!

Blessings,
Bayley

Hello Ladies! Today finds me still catching up on outstanding orders, getting ready for my end of the year/holiday break. Besides sewing, I have been busy otherwise - Daniel has a stomach bug so has been needing extra care the past couple days. I think he caught it while we are at the eye doctor in the city - why do I take him to the doctor this time of year??? I spent all of Tuesday in the city - besides Daniel's eye doctor, we went to the international travel clinic to see about Gracie's Yellow Fever shot, plus shopped for a bridal shower we will attend tomorrow. A big surprise at the doctor was that Daniel needs glasses!

As for my vacation, I will shut down inventory Sunday night (the 9th). You will still be able to access the site, but you will not be able to order anything. Those of you with outstanding orders, do not worry! Next week will finish up and all should be shipped by Friday the 14th.

We will re-open the shopping cart and you will be able to make orders after January 2, 2008! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

God's richest blessings to you and yours,
Bayley

11/30/07

Still catching up from my week off - maybe I should have shut down the shopping cart for that time! But don't worry - I will be able to get your orders out soon. I will go ahead and ship tomorrow (Saturday) even though I usually don't. Doing so will help relieve the back log. Most of the outstanding orders from the 14th through the 26th should all be ready to ship by then. Then I will begin on orders made after Nov. 27th. (As always, non-covering orders ship by next business day.)

Remember, any orders needed before Christmas should be made before next Wednesday!

I did not get to update the New & Coming Soon page. We were to Alabama to my MIL's home over Thanksgiving. She is 84 and ready to sell her large home and move. We did a lot of cleaning, going through cupboards, packing, and giving to Goodwill. Once things slow down here over my December vacation, I will hopefully get to do some updating of the website.

God's blessings,
Bayley

Orders needed before Christmas should be placed no later than Wednesday, December 5th!

We will be closed and not accepting orders beginning Monday, December 10, until next year - 2008! We will re-open on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. Have a safe and blessed holiday with godly fellowship with friends and family! It has been a pleasure serving you and getting to know you this year.

11/16/07

Well, I sure am looking forward to my break next week! October was a super busy month with double the normal amount of orders, which has set me back a bit this month as well.

Six orders will ship out today (Friday the 16th) and as many again tomorrow. If you have ordered before Sat., Nov.17th, your order will go out by Monday the 19th.

Remember, any orders after today (the 16th) will be set aside until we re-open on Monday, November 26!

On another note, we have a few new things. I will try to update the New & Coming Soon page next week. I have acquired another small bolt of Vintage Linen, this time in white. Our Evening Covering has some new fabric options and we will get new pictures up for it soon. Once everyone sees how it looks in a non-stiff fabric, I think it will prove to be a popular veil. We will also be changing the fabric for our Slip-On Veils. My normal veil fabric is a single knit, so it does not have very much stretch, which the Slip-On really needs. I have looked for the “right” fabric for the Slip-Ons for a while now, and finally I think I have found it.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving holiday, hopefully filled with family, love, and fellowship!
Bayley

Please recall that we will be closed Saturday, November 17 to Monday, November 26. Any orders made during this time will not be processed, sewn, or shipped until after the 26th.

Also, orders needed before Christmas should be placed no later than Wednesday, December 5th!

Hello Ladies,
So far, October has been an extremely busy month with over 60 orders in just the first two weeks alone! I'm keeping the sewing machines humming!

Some have asked about shipping before holidays, etc. If you want to receive an order before Christmas this year, I would suggest your order be made by Monday, December 3.

My new store hours policy seems to be doing well. It has helped me organize my time better than before, so I am thankful.

I hope you all are enjoying the lovely fall weather - I sure am! Especially the rain after the worst drought Kentucky has seen in 100 years.

God's blessings, Bayley

Our 6 month anniversary!

September 1st was the sixth month anniversary of our re-opening of Plain & Simple Heacoverings under new ownership. I have been thinking about these past months of business, being new to it all. It did take a little while to get used to things, get organized, and get everything running smoothly. I have "met" some very kind and generous customers and of course had a fair share of difficulties as well. One thing I have found is that I am much more busy with Plain & Simple than I thought I'd be! So far, we have filled over 480 orders!

Plain & Simple is just me, Bayley. I do have a little help from a sewing friend from time to time, which is much appreciated. But, still, I am one woman who is also trying to run a household and raise six children. Balancing family life and Plain & Simple is proving to be more difficult than I expected as well.

After discussing it with my husband, we have decided to have set times when we will be closed. As these times approach, notices will be posted on the site so that you may order before closing times and not get caught needing something when I am unable to provide it.

For two weeks in both March and September, we will close shop for machine maintenance, inventory, sewing for my family, and spring and fall house cleaning. We will also close the week of Thanksgiving because we travel that week, and also the last week of December for end of year accounting and family time.

We are not sorry we bought this lovely business and I truly enjoy serving you! Thank you for understanding our need to organize my time better and have periodic breaks from sewing and filling orders. Also a big THANK YOU to all my loyal customers who have bought from Plain & Simple these past six months!

~Bayley & family

Peace is not the absence of affliction, but the presence of God. ~Unknown

Dear Friends, We will be CLOSED until Monday, October 1st. Any orders made between now and then will be delayed, possibly until mid-October. THANK YOU! ~The Thompson Family

Time for an update! We did have our work bee and got a lot of the framing up. Over the month of July, my husband continued on it and the plumber and electrician were here nearly every day for a couple weeks. We had another work bee last Saturday to get the drywall up. A lot was accomplished and we will continue with drywall every night all this next week. We are trying to get the bathroom to the point of painting and flooring, so that the plumber can return and set in the toilet and sink.

This going on plus my serger needing repair put me behind last month, and I still am trying to catch up. Tomorrow I think I will be 100% caught up with orders. Thank you all for being patient with me.

Another thing that added to my busy-ness was Farmer's Market. I had not planned to do it this year, but I went ahead and put in enough cucumbers to do a few special order pickles. Well, people at market started threatening to come find me to get pickles, so I started back pickling. Sales are very brisk! We have had a once in 100 years kind of drought this year, so the cukes are slowing down. Anna Joy sells them at market for me so I don't have to leave Daniel as much as in years past.

I will be taking a couple weeks off in September to do some much needed sewing for me and the girls. Any orders made before Saturday, September 1, will be sewn as usual; any orders after the 1st that require sewing will be delayed. I will let you know more as the time approaches.

Blessings in Christ, who alone is Life,

Bayley

Hello Ladies,
Well, so much for vacation! It has been nice to not sew for a few days, but I will be back at it starting today (a little earlier than planned). For a good reason - our work bee has been postponed. Sandy Tucker, founder of the Galilean Children's Home, is a well known woman in our area and around the country. They have an Amish and Mennonite quilt auction every October to help support the home. Sandy has gone to be with the Lord, and her viewing and funeral will be over the weekend. Several of the men from our church are firemen and will be doing crowd control /parking assistance, etc., at this huge funeral for three days.

As for the rest of my "vacation" duties, all our doctoring for this week is done. But it looks like our summer is going to be full of it - next week on Monday we are back to the city. Rosemary will be participating in a medical study about Auditory Processing Disorder.

All our current outstanding orders should be shipped well within our standard two week time frame.

God bless you all,

Bayley

Hello Ladies,
Vacation time! Actually, I won't be going anywhere much. We have had many doctor appointments the past month and I am a little behind on my sewing. But, next week, during "vacation" I will be doing MORE doctor appointments. Seems like everything has happened all at once... At Daniel's 3 year check up, his thyroid tests came back abnormal, so we were sent to a pediatric endocrinologist. Daniel has Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which is manageable with synthroid taken every day. Zeke and Joy seem like they are smothering half the time, so they were to the ENT. Zeke will have his tonsils & adenoids out, and Anna Joy will have only her unusually enormous adenoids out - the doc had never seen anything like them. He said at her age they should be shrunken away to almost nothing. Grace's permanent retainer keeps popping off, so seems like I am at the orthodontist every other day. We go again Monday!

Also during vacation next week, we will be getting ready for some remodeling. Our 3 bedroom, one bath, house is just not enough room for 8! Especially with three teenagers. We will be finishing out part of our basement, putting in 2 bedrooms, a bath, a storage room, and a laundry room. We will be having a church work bee to get the framing up, so I will be doing some major cooking to feed all the helpers.

So, if you plan to order, do so quickly. I will not be sewing or shipping again until Monday, the 25th. Any orders made next week may be delayed a little as I catch up the week of the 25th.

God bless you all,

Bayley

4/19/07

Hello Ladies,
I will be out of town for several days, so orders may be slightly delayed. I will be back and sewing on Monday, Apr. 23.

My oldest now has his driver's license! He is 17 - he kept his permit for over a year because he was not confident enough for the road test. But now he can drive alone, so he has run up to the Post Office several times for me already, to take Plain & Simple packages to be mailed. On his way today, he found a dead (road killed) river otter. He collected it and put it in my freezer (!) until he could get it over to the Fish & Wildlife offices. It is a nice large otter and it will be mounted for display at the Salato Wildlife Education Center (where he works as a volunteer).

As for business, things continue to go well, a few "bumps in the road" but nothing huge. I have had to make a few changes concerning international orders (PayPal only - no more international money orders will be taken) and today the post office told me of new changes for foreign shipments.

I hope you have noticed the alert about postal rates on the home page. Rates will go up May 14th, and as of May 1st we will have new rates in effect here at Plain & Simple. I have found that I can no longer offer one rate for everything no matter how much is purchased, so your rate will vary depending on the total of your order.

I have changed a few prices as well. All veils went down in price and traditional coverings went up very slightly (5 cents). Also there is now a small extra charge for coverings made from two of the very expensive fabrics.

God bless you all,

Bayley

Hello Ladies,
I had an interesting encounter the other day... two of my daughters and I, along with Daniel, went to a “quilter's day out” held at the county extension office. There were vendors, food, door prizes, show and tell, and a demonstration on making artist's trading cards. There were easily 200 ladies there, all but us were quite “modern” and boisterous. I thought my one very shy and easily embarrassed daughter would pass out from all the noise and activity!

While in line to leave the demonstration program, an older lady commented to me about the tiny cards we had just learned about. Obviously “tiny” was not her cup of tea. I told her I enjoyed learning that and thought I might incorporate them into my business somehow, making ATCs to put in orders possibly. “Oh! You have a business! What is it?!” she exclaimed. So I tried to explain to her about Plain & Simple... I sometimes have a hard time explaining Plain & Simple. Christian women covering their heads is just NOT in most people's sphere of understanding! I point to my head (I wear a large stiff mesh cap, similar to our Traditional Round style), and say I sell prayer coverings, veils, hair accessories and the like. Most people give me a blank look, latch on the the word “veil” and say, “Oh! You make wedding veils!” This lady was different... although in her pant suit with a typical older woman's grey cut short puff of “set” hair, she knew EXACTLY what I was talking about. She says, “Do you make little veils like everyone always used to wear to church?” making motions with her hands about her head to show what she was speaking of. Yes, we make those as well, I told her. She thought that was just grand. She said, “Nobody makes those! I even looked for one at the Vatican when I was in Rome, and you'd think of all places, I'd find one there. But, no!”

The shops around the Vatican don't sell chapel veils? I thought that was interesting!

Many women of all stripes are beginning to take back what has been lost in the last 50 years and are again seeking to cover their heads in prayer. It's not just a Plain thing anymore. I am happy to see this! I am Anabaptist -- I wear a capedress or apron and a traditional Mennonite cap. Some of my friends have gently inquired if I will continue to sell chapel veils and lace coverings now that I run Plain & Simple, hoping I won't, it seems. But I will. I think it is wonderful that many Christian women, although not wanting to be as plain as I, still want to cover their heads according to 1 Corinthians 11. I hope our site and the products we have here (plain and not-so-plain) are an encouragement to you to hold fast and stand strong in your desire to cover.

God bless you all,

Bayley

This is our ONE MONTH ANNIVERSARY!

Thank you to all who have purchased from us! In this first month, we have filled 65 orders. I am learning, getting more and more organized, and really enjoying myself. I am thankful God led us to acquire Plain & Simple Headcoverings.

God's blessings to you all,

Bayley

2/28/07

WE ARE OPEN! There were just a couple rough spots there at first, but now things are all in order - I hope! We can now accept credit card orders using our secure cart via Authorize.NET. I have run several test orders ands they work fine.

Thank you to all who have ordered already! We will be getting your coverings out to you as soon as we can, hopefully you will receive your orders within two weeks of ordering. If there will be big delays, I will contact you.

We are all excited here at our house! And we are looking forward to serving you in your covering needs for a long time, the Lord willing.

God's blessings to you all,

Bayley

2/18/07

Dear Ladies,

It has been a very busy two weeks getting the business switched over. We are almost ready to open again; it looks like our February 28 opening date will be feasable, the Lord willing, and if no unforeseen glitches pop up.

I will keep you posted as the date draws near. In the mean time, I am adding some good articles to the Reading Room-- feel free to go and check them out.

Please continue to pray for us, that we be faithful stewards with what God has blessed us.

God's blessings to you all,

Bayley

2/3/07

Dear Ladies,

I am Bayley, the new owner of Plain and Simple Headcoverings. It has been a busy couple of weeks since my family decided to buy this endeavor. Alicia has graciously spent many hours on the phone with me, answering all my questions and equipping me with the knowledge I need to take things over here.

I hope it will be a smooth transition. We are busy reorganizing my sewing room and getting all the business end of things in place. At this point, I am looking at a probable re-opening date of February 28.

Please keep me and my family in prayer as we embark on this new adventure.

God's blessings to you all,

Bayley
