This picture shows what you will need to make a Mennonite hair bun. The large metal clip can be bent to adjust for thick hair. It doesn't show well in the photo but I have done this with mine. You will also need two barrettes that do not slip in the hair, sturdy hair pins, and a heavy hair net.
Part your hair down the middle and put a barrette on each side holding the hair back. Some ladies like to keep these barrettes close to the front. You do not want to get them too far back because you will use them to anchor your bun.
Pull your hair into a ponytail. Put the large metal barrette in upside down to secure the ponytail.
Pull your ponytail up over your head so that the barrette is now facing front ways. Some ladies will use another large barrette like we just used and put it above the previous one to secure the ponytail in an over the head position. You will notice I have hair sticking out on each side of the barrette. This will disappear in the next step. If you have trouble with this hair on the sides just use your hand to tuck it in under the barrette.
Start to twist the tail around the barrette, twisting the hair if you need to.
Keep twisting the hair around the barrette. Don't worry if your barrette gets a little crooked - you can adjust it if you need to. If you use a second large barrette as mentioned before, the barrettes do not move. Tuck the end of your hair under the bun.

I secure this bun with four hair pins. Think of your bun as the face of a clock. Put a hair pin at the 12, 6, 3 and 9. Then you are ready to put on your hair net. Put it over the bun then twist as shown in the picture and lay it over the bun again. You will have a double layer of net over your bun now.
Now it is time to anchor the hair net over the barrettes on each side of your hair. Catch the hair net with a hair pin then pull it away from your bun and over the barrette. Slip it under the barrette to hold the net secure.
Repeat this step with the other side of your bun anchoring the hair net over the barrette on the other side. Now use other hair pins to pull the net and bun flat.
As you anchor the hair net around your bun remember to pull the net away from your bun. The hair pins should grab hair as far away from the bun as you can make them reach. In doing so your bun will flatten more and more. The idea is to to make your bun as flat as you can. Shown here is a completed bun.

You are now ready to put your covering on and pin it into place. If using straight pins, it helps to pin the covering on each side in front of the barrettes you used to part your hair.
